Charles:
Somewhere lost in the ether is a message I sent to Lex (Neptunus Lex) when his squadron was deployed over the holidays. I can't find it, so I'll try and repost it here, as best I remember. Please disseminate it to your W/C, squadron-mates, the Ready Room as you see fit:

For well over 200 years this time of year has found you, American Sailors, at sea in your country's service. No one likes it, not family nor friends nor you. But is has been done, is done, and will be done in our foreseeable future, for we are a sea-faring people. You follow the wakes of tens of thousands who have looked to the horizon and let your thoughts sail towards home. Know that on this day similar thoughts, prayers and a simple "thanks" head out to you as well. You have served your country well, and you stand watch for us, so that we do not have to. You are with shipmates, so we may be with family. You are far, far from home, so that we do not have to. For that privilege, I am supremely thankful now, and even more humble to know that you all are out there, where I once was, carrying on one of the strongest traditions of our shared service, no matter how onerous that tradition may be.

May you sail safely in the wakes of your predecessors, and may Heaven guide you to safe harbor and home. On behalf of my family, and the proceeding generations who have all known such service, you have our most humble thanks.

Very respectfully,
Andy
