True story about R&R in Hong Kong circa 1968. Everyone in our WING out of DaNang stayed at the Astor Hotel (still there, btw) a mid-low cost, unassuming place. Its' mgr was a guy named--of all things--"V.C." Chan (his real name, LOL!!) Not only that, but he had, at the time, a son enrolled at my alma mater, LSU, studying engineering. He proudly showed this 66 grad a pic of his son wearing an LSU sweatshirt standing in front of Johnson Hall (where most of the engineering students stayed in those days) Talk about "small-world" six degrees of separation!

BTW, next time try eating@ "Jimmy's Kitchen" where all the consulate people often eat. Still there AFAIK and good food at reasonable prices.in those days. And do they still have all the floating restaurants in Aberdeen? Touristy, but still good food in a great atmosphere. "Course HK is changed beyond all recognition from 68. The old airport was in use then. The approach to landing was interesting to say the least...I still have some hand-tailored cashmere sports coats from back then, too...as well as my old Cannon 35mm SLR--still servicable tho no longer in use...

Glad to hear you had a good time. Next time, make sure you hit up The Night Market, or The Ladies Market. You can get a $5,000 Rolex for about 100 US, and tons of other goods, real or knock-off. Also, the Empire Hotel or the Lu Kwok Hotel are reasonably priced rooms right in the heart of Wan Chai, so when you go back check them out.
