Chronicles of Naval Aviation: Squadron Nicknames
We get mail and some of it is darn interesting. Take this for example – sometime back we posted on the return of CDR Pete Mongilardi’s remains from Vietnam. Following up on that posting came a note from the former OPS O of VA-153 relating how the Bluetail Flies came by that nickname. It occurred…
USNI: Getting It Right
The ongoing furor over the Board of Director’s attempt at a mid-watch hijacking of the Institute’s mission can, unfortunately, overshadow the very good work being done down in the trenches by the editorial board and legion of ink-stained wretches (and I use that term affectionately) in the trenches. Before re-directing to the BoD’s hi-jinks, I’d…
Flightdeck Friday — The Ties That Bind (II): Remembering Ned Geiger
Another Flightdeck Friday and sadly, another memorial – this time for another pillar of the E-2C Community, CAPT Edward C. Geiger, USN, ret. (“Ned”). Ned passed away suddenly earlier this week just as he was beginning to enjoy a well deserved retirement having wrapped up his post-Navy career. Services are tentatively slated for…

Flightdeck Friday – MIA Edition: WWII Navy Aircrew Returns Home
Last year, a small group of us spent the better part of the summer and fall writing on the Solomons Campaign. That drawnout slugfest in the southwest Pacific receives little notice beyond Guadalcanal and some discussions regarding Santa Cruz. The purpose of that exercise (here and over at USNI’s blog) was to surface the larger…

Midway – 70 Years Later: Battlespace
Geography: Midway Atoll is part of a chain of volcanic islands, atolls, and sea mounts extending from Hawaii up to the tip of the Aleutian Islands and known as the Hawaii-Emperor chain. Formed 28 million years ago, the island’s volcanic mass subsided over the years, gradually being replaced by a coral reef that grew around…
Forty-Six Years Ago Today…

The first US nuclear-powered submarine armed with long-range ballistic missiles, the GW was ordered on 31 December 1957, with orders to convert two attack submarine hulls to missile-carrying FBM…

I will indeed be there. Unfortunately, I wasn’t aware that the show was running all this week (figured it was a once a week deal.) Normally that’d be good, but this week is dead week, which for me is even busier than finals week (the wave of papers/projects that have been procrastinated on is about to break). Looks like I’ll have to shift some stuff around…
Mike:
Good news – if you happen to be Tivo or VCR challenged/deprived, you can go to the website (follow one of the links above) and hit the “Full Episode” tab. After the subj. episode airs, you’ll be able to watch online at your leisure.

Sweet, thanks. I was wondering if they were going to do some sort of online offering. Liked what I saw so far tonight. Definitely saw a couple of “leadership challenges” among the crew.
Dang. Missed it last evening because of the Stars-Sharks game. But I’ll be there tonite, fer shure!! 🙂
