We are sure there are more than a few former JO’s amongst our readership who remember the offer of a ride back to the ship in the wee hours of the AM after the last "O" boat had departed fleet landing by the CO’s gig under the eye of a merciful carrier CO who remembered his excursions last night ashore before getting underway as a JO, or the offer of a ride ashore having just missed the ferry.  And while we can’t help but harbor some suspicions that there isn’t some degree of social leveling animus at work, we lament the loss of standing to the ship it represents in foreign ports when the CO’s gig is now a what, RHIB – if even that?  Is the Admiral’s barge also a goner?  What’s next?

  1. The NAE strikes again!

What a friggin enterprise. Sounds like “The Committee” during Napoleon’s time. I can see Kilcline in my minds eye with his hand inside his lapel. Based on the hatchet job he did recently, it figures.

re- “AND FREE UP VALUABLE HANGAR BAY SPACE”

Ain’t that rich with 65 aircraft aboard, or what?

  2. IN MY 26 YEARS 1964/1990 I FONDLY REMEMBERING MY TRIPS BACK TO MY STEEL LADY (MY WIF CALLS IT) STANDING ON THE PIER AT 4AM WAITING ON THE FIRST ENLESTED BOAT AND THS SKIPPER WOULD ASK THE FEW OF US STANDING AROUND IF WE WANTED A RIDE… ITS A FACT THAT THEY COULD SAVE MONEY IN LOTS OF OTHER WAYS… 1 CAPTS GIG JUST AIN’T GONNA FREE UP THAT MUCH SPACE…

  3. With fewer and fewer aircraft on AMERICA we had 100 A/C. Carriers being build bigger than AMERICA was, what could possibly require the sq ft used by the Captain’s GiG. The Skipper should have his own transportation. Well I guess the only alternative is to make the COD serve as the CO’s GiG.
We are once again showing our infinate wisdom.

  4. When I was on IKE in ’96 the amount of waste we had to retain onboard was amazing – especially the plastics. Most of the latter was processed into recyclable “hockey pucks”, but that still required machinery to do the job which sat, yep, you guessed it, in HB#3. I can only imagine what manner of contraptions and “good ideas” have been foisted upon the CVN hangar bays in the interim… You’re right of course, Skipper should have his own transportation -being CO of an CVN isn’t small potatoes. The gig is part of the territory, period.

  5. Let me get this right, according to the message ALL U boats and Gigs gotta go. So now when the big deck anchors waaaaaay out, they have to have a local civilian ferry service. Who is, and how are these foreign nationals being vetted to ensure the safety and security of the crew and ship?? I think this is another outsource that will bite us in the butt eventually. IMHO

  6. ak:

As longtime readers/posters will tell you, no agendas here. Try posting your comments again or if you like, drop me a note offline if you’re still having troubles. Unless it’s something you’re trying to sell that is…

During a port visit to Victoria Mahe, I was on the dance floor with a local babe and noticed some dude out there too swiggin’ on a bottle and in general having a Grand Time.

He was the water taxi skipper…

Also, remember the tragedy in Haifa?

  8. What’s “Our Navy” gone to?

Hauled a lot of mail both ways on the “Gig” even with the “Skipper” on board, he didn’t care, move the mail for the crew.

Oh well glad I’m retired, now I’d be Storekeeper, and don’t have to put up with all these stupid clowns.

  9. Want to save money, stop buying tolit seats for $2,000.00, There is more money wasted on Capital Hill than any where else, the Military doesn’t have an open pocket book, the Capt . of a CVN deserves to have a “Capt’s gig.” It doesn’t take up that much space, I for one did get to ride in one when the Capt ask a few of us if we needed a ride back to the USS Ranger CVA 61, the speaker of the house has to have her own aircraft, that cost just a few more $$$$ that a Capt’s Gig. Give the Capt. the Honor he deserves.

  10. F8 Crusader Association ;
As indicated, I was never in Naval Aviation but I was PO in charge of runway and taxi way lighting at NAS Rota Spain in the early 60s. During that time VF84 the “Jolly Rogers” were a rotational sq. at Rota and those jet jockeys delighted in performing formation takeoffs and landings. One of my greatest memories is seeing an F8 stand on her tail and fly out of sight. I loved those planes then and still do. 😀

  11. Yeah, you bet they could save a lot of money somewhere else.
Just wait till the Demo’s get all the power…..

HOW DO WE WAKE UP THE LIBERAL ZOMBIES OUT THERE?
