Flightdeck Friday: New Year’s Preview

One of these will be next week’s feature  (hint: not the the F7F – it’s already been done).  Oh, and it will have a prop too…

Now, having said that, we could be persuaded by the readership towards one of the remaining tailhook candidates…  Leave your vote in the comments section (international candidates are OK too).

  1. How about an F9-F Panther? Did I get that designation correct? I’m going from memory here so I may be way off. If you haven’t done the Sea Fury yet, that’d be another one I’d love to see. Of course there’s only one airplane I’ve ever said that was ugly: USAF C-133. Not the C-130. The C-133. That little radome on the nose just makes it look stupid. But back to my point, it wouldn’t matter if it were the Wright Flyer on Flightdeck Friday, I’d still love it. But there’s my vote 🙂

  2. Jason –
You see, this was a little recce test (Dutch knows what I’m talking about…remember those?) using the film clip and the hints in the text – soooo, no C-133 and no F9F in play for next week from the list of potential candidates.

    (C-133?? where’s the hook?)

  3. Jim:

See this edition of Flightdeck Friday. One of these days I’ll post a master listing of all the Flightdeck Fridays as we’ve done some 68 and counting by now…

  4. I thought I’d seen that very same F7F at an airshow in Brownsville…but a check of the archives reveals it was another bird. I didn’t think there were that many air-worthy examples left, but I’m wrong. Again.

I have no vote, SJS…whatever you do will be jes fine by me. But I DO marvel that you’ve done 68 Flightdeck Fridays. I didn’t think the Navy had had that many airframes in toto. 😉

  5. Buck:

I guess this is the part where I’d say something snarky then about 68 & the number of flyable F-15’s?
    Thanks 😉

  6. Dutch – check out this Flightdeck Friday. On a larger note guess that pretty well seals it — my project during the playoffs will be to put up a library of the Flightdeck Fridays for quick reference… 😉

  7. Wasn’t able to watch the video because I’m down in Russell, KS hunting pheasant (bad internet) but from what I’ve gathered the video featured Bearcats, Tigercats, possibly an F9F, maybe a Shooting Star, perhaps a Sea Fury or Firefly (there’s at least one restored one floating about) for some British flavour. I vote for either of the RN models. Both would be outstanding, but if you have to do one I say the Firefly because it’s not as nearly as well known, has an interesting mission (some parallels to be drawn with the Tomcat, perhaps?) and as I recall the restoration effort was quite a cool story.

Oh, and about those Eagles…it’s a weak shot, but I have to at least try to return fire…as I remember it, the Tomcat and Eagle entered service right around the same time. One’s retired, and one’s not (yet.) Also, good luck getting plastic bugs to stay around that long. The USAF’s planes are made out of real metal (even if it is because they’re all ancient.)

  8. Please allow me to begin by saying that whatever you choose to showcase on Flightdeck Friday is, of course, always the perfect choice.

However, I thought it might be interesting to feature the F-2A Buffalo (U.S. Navy) or the Hawker Sea Hurricane (Royal Navy). If not for this coming Friday, then perhaps you might consider featuring one of them on a future post. Thank you, Sir.
