The Long War - Russian Bears back out of Hibernation?

August 11th, 2007 by User ImageSteeljawscribe

Pops (SJS) called and asked if we had put anything up on the Guam Bears   yet — we said we were busy with his other weekend rock-painting exercise article, but he said to do something.  So here’s some photos from the golden era (note the interceptor of choice) and a link back to his series about Bears and the North Atlantic. - SJA#3

    Steeljaw crew,

F-14’s and F-4’s were the only jets to intercept Tu-95 Bears.
Some family friends remember seeing the aluminum overcast fly overhead as some intercept controller in an E-2 sent an A-6 into find them and escort them away. Here is a link to a shot of a VA-95 Green Lizard KA-6D escorting a TU-95 away from the Big E in the mid-80’s http://www.dodmedia.osd.mil/Assets/Still/1984/Navy/DN-SN-84-03469.JPG.

My father remembers the Bear box fondly while doing the WestPac in the late 60’s and thru to the early 80’s. Too many times of having hearing the voice of god say “Now lauch the Alert 5 Fighter” and then 3 minutes later hear “Now launch the Alert 15 Tanker.” and having to run around to get a KA-6D ready to top off the F-4’s that went up to escort the snooper.
